Growing up on her father’s estate in Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford, Maria started writing educational texts, followed by novels, short stories, children’s stories as well as essays on politics and social issues. One of her most famous works is Castle Rackrent (1800), which inspired Sir Walter Scott.
